Defense Minister tours northeastern border, supports demands of retired military

Defense Minister Elias Bou Saab toured on Tuesday the northeastern border between Lebanon and Syria in a show of support to the demands of the retired servicemen who refuse to cut their pays as part of austerity measures.

“The retired servicemen have the right to live in dignity after years of sacrifices,” Bou Saab said.

He also noted that the retirement pension is pre-deducted from their salaries during their years of service, saying that it is unacceptable to carry out reforms this way.

Earlier, retired servicemen staged sit-ins across Lebanon to protest government's possible austerity measures that might affect their salaries and retirement pensions.
