More than 1500 surveillance cameras were installed around the streets of the capital Beirut by the municipality in 2014 and the debate over controlling these cameras is ongoing.

Since the cameras started operating, and the first control room in Al-Helou army barracks was activated in 2017 and then a second room in Karantina in 2018, the municipality handed this duty to the Internal Security Forces upon a decision by then Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq.

 

The official decision was issued by Beirut municipality three weeks ago in April 2019.

 

In this regard, Defense Minister Elias Bou Saab tackled the matter with Prime Minister Saad Hariri, requesting that the army manages the Karantina control room.
