REPORT :Tannoura Maxi censored in Lebanon, honored abroad

Lebanese movie “Tannoura Maxi” came back to the forefront after having spurred controversy in religious circles, prompting the Directorate of General Security to cut the scenes it deemed inappropriate.        

Tannoura Maxi won two awards at the Cannes International Film Festival and an Award for the most innovative film at the Washington DC International Film Festival. It turns out that what was rejected by the Lebanese community was greatly admired at the most prestigious international festivals.    

In this regard, the movie’s director Joe Bou Eid said that this award will not be his only arm, adding that spectators cannot be deluded by the media or by a censorship system “which has the intention to destroy culture and art.”    

Bou Eid told LBCI that Lebanon is very far from “open.”      

In the past few years, Lebanese movies imposed themselves at International Cultural Festivals. However, some Lebanese are still refusing to acknowledge the restoration of Lebanon’s role in the film production industry.                   

General Security response:                    

An official source from General Security told LBCI, in response to the report stating that the movie spurred controversy in religious circles, prompting the Directorate of General Security to cut the scenes it deemed inappropriate.            

The official said that the Catholic Information Center contacted the General Security and asked to stop the show of the movie. Later it was agreed that a number of scenes must be removed, with the approval of the producer who decided to halt the show for two days in order to handle the issue.                                          

The General Security stressed that its role was only to sponsor the solution and to help reach an agreement between the producer of the film and the Church.
