REPORT: University elections mirror country’s sharp political divide

Student elections across Lebanese Universities are witnessing a sharp divide between March 8 and March 14’s student groups.

This divide was recently mirrored by the victory of the Free Patriotic Movement (March 8) and its allies at the American University of Beirut (AUB), and that of the Lebanese Forces and the Future Movement (March 14) at the Lebanese-American University (LAU) in Jbeil. Ironically, each alliance is convinced that it has the majority.

While Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) students are sticking to the centrist stance of their party which is calling for keeping university students away from the country’s political divide, partisans of the National Liberal Party (Ahrar) are trying to compensate for their absence from the political arena by nominating the most distinct students for candidacy.
