REPORT: What is left of the Independence House in Bchamoun?

The house of Sheikh Hussain al-Halabi or House of Independence is located in the village of Bchamoun in Aley’s Chahhar area. It is the victim of official neglect as it has never been renovated despite the annual promises made on the eve of every Independence Day.

On November 11, 1943, this house witnessed the formation the “Government of Free Lebanon” headed by Habib Abou Chahla. The house was the siege of the first Lebanese government and witnessed the confidential parliamentary session during which the new Lebanese flag was drawn, signed and then raised on the house’s roof. Up until this day, this house which witnessed Lebanon’s independence is still home to our first flag.
