The decree calling on all voters to elect MPs on June 9 is still waiting to be signed by the Prime Minister and the President.        

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel who started preparing for elections based on the 1960s electoral law is still waiting for the results of political debates over the electoral law, mainly the meetings of the sub-parliamentary committee to know if talks seeking a new law were serious and positive. “If this law sees the light one month before elections, there will be a months-long technical postponement,” he said voicing his fear of another postponement.       

Charbel stressed that if no electoral law is reached, elections will definitely be postponed and they will be boycotted. “The obsession will continue to exist as long as disputes exist among the Lebanese,” he said.          

Charbel hoped that the situation will not reflect negatively on the country and lead to a strife, stressing the necessity of a political consensus.
