REPORT: Arab revolutions continued in 2012

During 2012, revolutions in Arab countries continued.

In Syria, the revolution that began peacefully turned into a war between the rebels and the Syrian Army, causing the death of more than 40,000 people. Tensions on the borders with Turkey and Israel occurred as well.

This as, a new envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, was appointed by the UN and the Arab-League. He was commissioned to find a solution for the Syrian crisis after his predecessor Kofi Annan presented his resignation. The opposition Syrian Coalition was also formed.

In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood won the presidential elections and President Mohammad Morsi arrived to power.

However, his controversial constitutional declaration angered the anti-Muslim Brotherhood Egyptians who took to the streets once again to protest Morsi’s action.
