REPORT: Civil marriage contract cannot be concluded in Lebanon

Days after the first marriage contract was announced in Lebanon between Kholoud Succariyah and Nidal Darwish, the couple still face legal difficulties disabling them from registering their marriage.

The contract was referred to the Ministry of Justice and was rejected since “the current law does not allow the registration of the marriage”.

In this context, Justice Minister Shakib Kortbawi told LBCI that the law on which the contract was based was not ratified by the legislators, stressing that a clear law that legislates civil marriage in Lebanon should be voted upon at parliament.
