REPORT: Woman’s nationality clashes, once again, with official legislation

The organizers of "My Nationality is a Right for Me and my Family Campaign" expressed their anger toward the way the government and the ministerial committee are dealing with the issue of granting Lebanese women their right to pass on their Lebanese nationality to their children.

Sources told LBCI that the ministers discussed the cost of giving permanent residence permits to the children of Lebanese women, and the possibility of allowing them to benefit from social security service, without granting them political rights like the nationality or the right to vote.

In this context, Lina Abou-Habib, coordinator of the campaign said that “demanding the nationality aims at achieving the right thing, not at ensuring services”, noting that the ministerial committee is not tackling their demand.

Abou Habib revealed that escalatory steps may be taken, should the situation of Lebanese women remain as it is.
