Why Gen Z is falling out of love with dating and into budgeting

Report by Theresia Rahme, English Adaptation by Karine Keuchkerian

Twenty-four percent of young people are avoiding romantic relationships because of the cost. Today, dating is no longer just about love; it is also about money.

Years ago, dating was simpler, not necessarily because life was easier, but because expressions of affection were different. A kind word or a poem from an admirer could build an entire romance.

Options were also more limited: a walk around the neighborhood, a coffee outing, or a meeting at a wedding or holiday gathering within a familiar social circle.

Today, however, Google Maps points users toward new places and provides reviews. TikTok offers recommendations, and apps highlight deals and promotions.

As social media's influence on young people has grown, so has the pressure for outings to be attractive, aesthetically pleasing, and similar to the experiences seen online. That often means spending more money.

This is where the economic aspect comes in.

Gen Z has become more strategic about dating, carefully planning outings and searching for less expensive alternatives.

According to Reuters, young people are increasingly looking for offers before going out, using apps, websites, and TikTok to find discounts and happy-hour deals.

According to Bank of America, about 51% of Gen Z spend nothing on dating each month. This suggests many are cutting back on paid dates, opting for free activities or simply postponing dating because of financial pressures.

The trend extends beyond romance. About 75% of Gen Z said they actively look for ways to save money whenever they go out.

Whether it is a date, spending time with friends, or taking part in social activities, cost has become a key factor in decision-making.
