Gaddafi spy chief Senussi captured

Muammar Gaddafi's spy chief, Abdullah al-Senussi, has been arrested in southern Libya, Free Libya TV said on Sunday.      

"The battalion of Je'fel Fazzan captured Abdullah al-Senussi in his sister's home close to Sabha," Free Libya TV's correspondent said.

On the other hand former rebel forces loyal to Libya's interim government have surrounded Muammar Gaddafi's former intelligence chief, Abdullah al-Senussi, and are negotiating his surrender, a senior commander of the fighters told Reuters.    

General Ahmed al-Hamdouni said there had been no fighting after his men, acting on information from local people, surrounded the house of Senussi's sister near the desert town of Birak, 500 km south of Tripoli.  

They had seen Senussi and were negotiating with him, he added.      

On Saturday, former rebel fighters detained Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam in the same area.  

Both he and Senussi have been indicted for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court at The Hague. 

A spokesman for Libya's interim administration, the National Transitional Council (NTC), said local officials in the desert town of Sabha had confirmed the capture on Sunday of Muammar Gaddafi's intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi.A day after Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam was captured in the same general region, Abdul Hafiz Ghoga told a news conference that Senussi, the elder Gaddafi's brother-in-law and loyal confidant, had been seized.

Earlier, an NTC military official said Senussi had been surrounded at a house owned by his sister.Following the killing of Muammar Gaddafi a month ago, his son and Senussi had been the surviving Libyans on the wanted list of the International Criminal Court. Ghoga said the NTC had agreed to resist requests from the ICC to hand them over and would argue that it could run fair trials in Libya.
