C.African Republic clashes killed at least 281 - Red Cross

The Red Cross in Central African Republic has collected the bodies of 281 people killed during two days of violence in the capital Bangui, the organisation's president said on Friday.

Pastor Antoine Mbao Bogo said staff had to stop work as night fell on Friday but the toll was likely to rise significantly when they resumed work at the weekend.

"Tomorrow is going to be a monster of a day. We're going to work tomorrow and I think we're going to need a fourth day too," he said.

Dieudonne Nzapalainga said nine people had been executed in the Boeing neighbourhood, near the airport, while another 30 bodies had been brought to the mosque in the PK5 neighbourhood.

At least 105 people were killed on Thursday. France is rushing troops to its former colony, which has slid into chaos and inter-religious violence since mainly Muslim rebels ousted the president in March.

The said French reinforcements arrived in the Central African Republic capital Bangui to bolster a force due to rise to 1,200 in coming days, Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said.

"The operation has effectively started," Le Drian told RFI radio of patrols by French troops.

He added that the night had been calm after fighting on Thursday between mainly Muslim former rebels now in charge of the country and a mix of local Christian militia and fighters loyal to ousted president Francois Bozize.

A Reuters witness and an aid worker said at least 105 people were killed.
