China refuses to impose sanctions on NKorea

China rejected US-led pressure to impose sanctions on its ally North Korea after it launched a long range rocket on Wednesday.

The Obama administration has condemned Wednesday's launch as a "highly provocative act" for which there would be "consequences" and has begun working at the U.N. Security Council on steps which could broaden existing sanctions on North Korea - already the most isolated country in the world.

In this context, the US demanded further action from China, however Chinese Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Hong Lei reported that China believes that any UN response “should be prudent, appropriate and conducive to peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and avoid the escalation of the situation.”
