Ecuador supports stopping oil drilling in Amazon reserve

Ecuadorians voted in favor of ceasing oil extraction from a protected area in the Amazon, according to the results released on Monday from a referendum considered a historic example of democracy on climate issues.

The "yes" option to halt exploitation of an oil field in the Yasuni National Park, one of the world's most biodiverse areas, received 59 percent of the votes, after the electoral committee counted 98 percent of the ballots.
