Countdown begins in Washington to avoid federal government shutdown

Millions of Americans are preparing for the halt of salaries and social benefits in the coming days as Congress leans towards a government shutdown due to the obstruction of right-wing Republicans' efforts to pass the budget.

Four months after narrowly avoiding a catastrophic debt default, the world's largest economy is once again on the brink of a crisis, with the effects of the shutdown expected to become evident by the end of the week.
