Protest boats approach Gaza coast
Palestinian activists say two protest boats are approaching the Gaza coast and intend to violate Israel's naval blockade of the territory.

Gaza activist Rana Baker says the boats are currently 80 miles (130 kilometers) from Gaza and have not yet been intercepted by the Israeli navy.

The two small boats trying to reach Gaza on Friday are carrying supplies and 27 activists.

Israel says its naval blockade of Gaza is vital to prevent weapons from reaching militant groups like Hamas, the Iran-backed group that rules the territory.

Israel's government has said the activists can send their supplies into Gaza overland.

Last year, nine Turks were killed when they resisted an Israeli operation to halt a similar flotilla.
