Will Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia join Schengen?
Romania and Bulgaria must wait before entering Schengen after Austria refused to expand the zone on Thursday. A favorable decision is expected on Croatia, barring a surprise.

"Today I will vote against the expansion of Schengen to include Romania and Bulgaria," Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner announced upon his arrival to meet his European counterparts in Brussels.

Austria worries that removing border controls with these two nations will increase the number of migrants arriving. Austria is currently dealing with a significant increase in asylum requests.
 
"This year, we recorded more than 100,000 illegal border crossings in Austria," the minister stated.
