REPORT: Tension prevails over USJ on the backdrop of elections results

Clashes erupted Monday between the students at Saint Joseph University in Huvelin Street, on the backdrop of the results of the students’ council elections held last week.  

Accordingly, security forces interfered to break the sit-in staged by the students who did not enter the university’s campus.

Consequently, classes will be suspended at the USJ’s Social Sciences faculty on Tuesday.
  
In this context, MP Sami Gemayel contacted the Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces General Jean Qahwaji and the head of the university, calling on them to assume their responsibility concerning the provocations carried out against the students.           

Later in the day, President Michel Sleiman made a series of phone calls that included caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, the LAF Chief General Jean Qahwaji and the head of the university Father Salim Dakkash, as well as security officials, and discussed the events that took place at the university.

Sleiman stressed that democracy is about accepting and recognizing the elections results, calling on all the students to practice sportsmanship in order to improve their situation.
