France says Syrian regime might be implicated in Jacquier death

French daily Le Figaro quoted a source close to the French presidency on Friday as implicating the Syrian regime in the death of the award-winning correspondent for France-2 Television Gilles Jacquier.

“The Syrian authorities were the only ones who knew that a group of Western journalists were visiting Homs that day and in which neighborhood they could be found,” the source explained to the daily.

Jacquier, the first Western reporter killed in Syria in 10 months of unrest, was in a government-escorted media group visiting a pro-Assad neighborhood of the divided city, which has been wracked by protests, crackdowns and sectarian violence.

The French government, human rights groups and Syria's opposition demanded an inquiry into the death Wednesday of Jacquier in a barrage of grenades in the restive city of Homs.

The governor of Homs formed a committee to investigate Jacquier's killing, the state-run news agency said. But observers say the probe should be international.
