Lebanon returns artifacts dating back to centuries BC to Iraq

Iraqi ambassador to Lebanon Omar Barzanji said Saturday that his country appreciates Lebanon and the national museum for returning 78 artifacts seized in Lebanon after being smuggled out of Iraq. These artifacts include cuneiform inscriptions, statues and murals dating back to centuries BC.

Barzanji said, following his meeting with Education Minister Gaby Layoun, that these artifacts have most of all a humanitarian value.

For his part, Layoun congratulated Iraqis for these findings, hoping that Iraq will recover all its missing items.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Layoun indirectly tacked the issue of Beirut's Roman Hippodrome. “Unfortunately, Beirut has recently been the scene of an artifacts trade, political trade and misinformation”.

“Some media outlets are knowingly or unknowingly participating in the political trade for personal, political reasons and for individual interests”, he said.
