Sit-in to prevent shutdown of 56 special needs institutions

A number of Lebanese citizens held a sit-in outside Jounieh Serail on Friday to protest against the decision to shut down 56 institutions for people with special needs. The participants called on the state to look into the needs of their special needs children, stressing the necessity to enforce laws that protect them.

7-year-old Aziz who is deaf and studies at the Father Roberts Center had to drop out of school due to the state’s inability to pay its share.

The situation of Aziz and his family applies to hundreds of families that find themselves in a stalemate when special needs institutions and associations are unable to continue playing a role that the state is supposed to play.

Owners of these institutions and associations urged the state to apply the law of social work advancement, stressing that they cannot survive without the support of the state.
