EDL contract workers threaten to go back to protests

EDL contract workers threatened on Monday that they will go back to protests and will re-erect tents in the company’s building if they do not receive their salaries today.                    

In this context, member of the EDL contract workers follow up committee Bilal Bajouk said that the committee granted time for discussing the issue of salaries, which were supposed to be paid today. Instead the deadline has been moved till Tuesday afternoon.                 

Furthermore, the company’s employees had returned to the company’s building in Corniche al-Nahr after they forcibly moved to the Zouk power plant due to the sit-in held by contract workers.                             

Also on Monday, the company’s offices were reopened with the help of security forces who made sure nothing was missing.                           

EDL contract workers had been protesting for months calling on the government to employ them as full-time staff and to pay their salaries. Their protests included shutting the gates of EDL headquarters in Beirut and disrupting normal work at the state-run company.
