Britain's May delivers emotional resignation speech

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday became emotional as she confirmed she would step down as leader of the Conservative Party, triggering a contest for a new prime minister who will have to try to break the impasse over Britain's departure from the European Union.

In an emotional speech outside No. 10 Downing Street, May said it was now clear to her that it was in the best interests of the country for a new prime minister to lead efforts to deliver Brexit.

“It is, and will always remain, a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit. It will be for my successor to seek a way forward that honors the result of the referendum,” she said.

“I will shortly leave the job that it has been the honor of my life to hold - the second female Prime Minister but certainly not the last. I do so with no ill-will, but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love.”
