Bassil says protests could be opportunity for reform or could lead to massive disaster

Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil the current protests come as a result of a buildup of crises and failures, adding that “what may come next will be greater if not dealt with.”

Following his meeting with President Michel Aoun at Baabda presidential palace, he said that the current events could be a chance to save Lebanon or it can turn into a massive economic, financial, social and security disaster dragging Lebanon into chaos and strife.

“Either a great collapse or a bold rescue,” he added.

The minister stated that some from within the country are waging an economic war against Lebanon and calling for overthrowing the regime, adding that some are trying to veer this popular movement from its main objective.

Bassil stressed that the alternative to the current cabinet is foggy and could be chaos that leads to sedition.

“Our position until yesterday was to present a radical solution and pass a budget that includes reforms; and we have rejected any new taxes,” he said.

In this regard, he emphasized that a rescue operation is still possible over the next few days without empty promises.

“I am willing to ask our ministers and deputies to relinquish their immunity and bank secrecy,” he continued.
