Berri calls for dialogue on presidential vacuum next week, waits blocs’ decisions

Clearly and directly, the Speaker of the Parliament called for dialogue in his second official attempt to bring together the parties.

As soon as the ninth session to elect a president was adjourned, Berri said it explicitly; dialogue is necessary.

Speaker Berri's move this time seems more planned. He called for a new election session, but at the same time, he allowed the different parliamentary blocs to meet him halfway.

According to LBCI's sources, the Berri will wait for the blocs' response by Tuesday at the latest; to decide whether Thursday's session will be devoted to a new elections session or dialogue.

Sources add that the dialogue session if agreed upon, will take place in the hall in which the dialogue took place in 2006 in the parliament, with the participation of representatives of parliamentary blocs, and not in the general assembly hall, as it is impossible to dialogue with 128 deputies.

If the blocs agree on the dialogue session, the following Thursday sessions will be devoted to dialogue, not elections.

So what about the positions of the blocs on Berri's call?

The position of the strong Lebanon bloc on the dialogue has yet to be made clear, while Hezbollah, as is well known, does not hide its support for dialogue.

The Democratic Gathering (PSP) bloc has pre-empted the Speaker's call by inviting the parties to be convinced that there is no escape from the dialogue.

According to MP Elias Hanakish, Kataeb also welcomes Berri's invitation. For its part, the Lebanese Forces sources confirmed to LBCI that its official position would be issued by the Strong Republic bloc, which will discuss the idea to take the appropriate position.

In conclusion, the Speaker of the parliament threw the ball into the court of the parliamentary blocs. Will the political forces seize this initiative to save face for the parliament, or will matters return to square one?
