MP Ghanem: Electoral sub-committee discussions are being held in a positive light

MP Robert Ghanem said Wednesday that the sub-parliamentary committee tasked with discussing the electoral law will be looking into the suggestion of MP Ali Bazzi this afternoon, away from the eye of the media.

"Discussions are being held in a positive light and all committee members are opening up to one another," he said in a press conference held following the committee's meeting.

The committee resumed its meetings at the house of parliament in Beirut’s Nejmeh Square earlier on Wednesday under the chairmanship of MP Robert Ghanem and in the presence of MPs representing the main political groups in the country.

Talks featured high on the hybrid electoral law; a proposal that mixes both the majoritarian and proportionality systems into one. Discussions will also include the proposal made by MP Ali Bazzi in this regard.

Meanwhile MP Sami Gemayel said that he would be proposing a hybrid law based on a 60-40 formula, i.e 60% on the majoritarian system and 40% on the proportionality system with the division of Lebanon into 9 electoral districts.

For his part, Lebanese Forces MP George Adwan confirmed that his bloc’s proposal is ready adding that he will await his turn to make the pitch without failing to listen to all the other suggestions.

Meanwhile the Change and Reform Bloc MP Alain Aoun reiterated Adwan’s stance in regards to “listening to other blocs”.

In turn, MP Ali Fayyad said that his bloc will review the suggestions with a team of consultants to reach a valid conclusion.

The sub-committee will be continuing its discussions within a second meeting which will be held later in the evening.
