Abiad: Covid-19 numbers in Lebanon have climbed in the past week
Minister of Health Firas Abiad said on Saturday that new daily Covid-19 numbers in Lebanon have climbed in the past week.

He went on to say that the increase is noticeable in all age groups, however it is more noticeable in the younger ones.

“This is most likely related to the low vaccination rates in those age groups, the beginning of the colder season, and the start of schools.” Abiad said in a series of tweets.

The minister went on to say that when more vaccines come in the country, the Ministry of Health intends to speed up the immunization effort.

"This will be accomplished by providing additional help to resource-strapped and overburdened vaccination centers, as well as providing the vaccine to age groups who were previously ineligible," he explained.

Abiad stressed the importance of accelerating the vaccine drive to dampen a possible new wave, dubbing it as not sufficient.

“Public adherence to safety measures remains important. Yet, people are besieged with so many different crisis that Covid-19 seems a distant concern,” he lamented.

Abiad also noted that an awareness campaign and the preparations for the festive season will help in this regard.

He voiced hopes that the the sad events of last year will not repeat themselves, adding however that meetings with the hospitality sector resulted in agreement on measures to help mitigate the risks of the upcoming gatherings.

“People are due a break, but safety remains a priority,” he concluded by saying.
