Aoun summons Central Bank Governor Salameh

President Michel Aoun summoned on Thursday Central Bank governor Riyad Salameh after the bank decided to lift subsidies on fuel imports.

This as sources from Baabda said that President Aoun asked Salameh about the decision to lift fuel subsidies and informed him that such a decision can not be taken in isolation from the government’s policy.

The same sources added that Aoun also told Salameh that Article 95 of the Lebanese constitution stipulates that the government sets the general policies in the country, and there is a plan to gradually raise or rationalize subsidies and also includes a ratio card.

The sources concluded by considering that "the decision came at a suspicious time."

Yesterday, the Central Bank said that it will open new credit lines for fuel imports based on the market price for the Lebanese pound as of today.
