Kfarhelda residents block roads to protest wastewater refinery project

Security forces reinforced with armored military vehicles were deployed on Wednesday morning across the town of Kfarhelda, in the district of Batroun, in order to protect the employees of the company tasked with implementing the project of the establishment of a wastewater refinery plant in the town.

Accordingly, the residents took the streets, rang the church bells and blocked the roads preventing the contractor of the company from entering the town, leading the latter to end the works.                

In this context, the residents’ spokesman Georges Saad stressed that there was no need for the authorities to send security forces to the town, noting that Kfarhelda is a safe area and the residents were protesting peacefully and democratically. He said that the protesters did not breach security norms nor did they attack the company’s facilities, holding caretaker Energy Minister Gebran Bassil responsible for any security clash in the region.

On Tuesday, the residents of Kfarhelda and neighboring towns took to the streets to protest the establishment of a wastewater refinery plant near their homes.
