LAF: Car dismantled in Dahiyeh contained 50 kg of explosive materials

The Lebanese Armed Forces General Command said in a statement on Tuesday that the booby trapped car dismantled on Monday evening in South Beirut's Dahiyeh region contained 50 kilograms of explosive materials.                                 

The LAF noted that the explosive materials were comprised of 3 landmines, 6 cluster bombs, around 20 KG of reinforced aluminum powder, and a large quantity of TNT.                                         
The Army Command added in the statement that judicial authorities are proceeding with investigations to reveal the circumstances of the incident.                                   

Lebanese security forces defused on Monday, October 14 a car bomb in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah.                 

The discovery of a bomb happened on the first night of the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha and two months after a car bomb killed 20 people in the area, and looked like the latest sign of growing sectarian tensions in Lebanon exacerbated by the war in neighboring Syria.                      
The bomb was found in a Jeep Cherokee parked in the Maamoura area, a Lebanese army statement said.              

Car bombs are becoming increasingly common in Lebanon.       

A powerful car bomb tore through the Beirut Southern Suburbs' region of Roueis, a stronghold of Hezbollah on Thursday the 15th of August, claiming the lives of 27 civilians and leaving more than 289 wounded.                                                 

This is the second explosion to target the area in the span of less than a couple of months. A large explosion rocked a stronghold of the Hezbollah group south of the Lebanese capital Tuesday July 9th, setting several cars on fire and causing an estimated 53 injuries, security officials said.                               

The violence raises the specter of Lebanon being pulled into the increasingly sectarian civil war raging next door in Syria.
