Judge Zain issues arrest warrant against suspect over Bir al-Abed, Roueis bombings

Military Examining Magistrate Imad al-Zain interrogated on Wednesday a Lebanese suspect for links to bombings in Beirut's Southern Suburbs, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Judge Zain issued an arrest warrant against Hassan R. on charges of committing terrorist acts in the Bir al-Abed and al-Roueis areas, killing and wounding a number of people as well as destroying vehicles and property.

The suspect is in custody in connection to terrorist attacks.

Judge Zain will interrogate other suspects linked to the Beirut bombings on Monday.

On Tuesday July 9th, a large explosion rocked the Bir al-Abed region, a stronghold of the Hezbollah group south of the Lebanese capital, setting several cars on fire and causing an estimated 53 injuries, security officials said.

In mid-August, a powerful car bomb tore through the Beirut Southern Suburbs' region of Roueis, a stronghold of Hezbollah, claiming the lives of 27 civilians and leaving more than 289 wounded.

The violence raises the specter of Lebanon being pulled into the increasingly sectarian civil war raging next door in Syria.

The Syrian conflict, now in its third year, is whipping up sectarian fervor in Lebanon. Sunni-Shiite tensions have risen sharply, particularly since Hezbollah raised its profile by openly fighting alongside President Assad's forces. Lebanese Sunnis support the rebels fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a member of a Shiite offshoot sect.
