Maronite bishops call for electing a president capable of protecting Lebanon

The Maronite Bishops Council expressed Wednesday relief over the implementation of the security plan in the northern city of Tripoli, hoping that the plan will cover all troubled regions.

Following its monthly meeting, the council urged politicians to support the army, calling on them to remain committed to their constitutional duties and elect a new president capable of maintaining Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability.

The bishops issued a statement whereby they denounced the kidnapping attempt of Bishop Semaan Atallah, calling on the government and the security forces to take the necessary measures in order to put an end to the wave of abductions.

In their statement, the Maronite bishops demanded that the efforts exerted to free the kidnapped bishops and the Lebanese nationals held in Syrian jails be intensified.
