MP Sami Gemayel: Pay scale solution lies in privatization of electricity sector

Kataeb MP Sami Gemayel held on Wednesday a press conference in which he stressed on the rightful demands of the Union Coordinating Committee.

Gemayel however noted that the revenues of the Lebanese state are far less than the expenses, due to the security situation, the economic problems, and the presence of refugees.

He also noted that the parliament is trying to solve the pay scale crisis without falling into deficit, which may lead to the failure of paying public employees' salaries, and the public debt.

As a solution, Gemayel called for the privatization of the electricity sector in order to provide funds for the pay scale and to avoid dragging the country into a huge crisis.

On another note, he called on Speaker Nabih Berri to hold a parliamentary session in the next two weeks in order to vote on an electoral draft law for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The 1960 law, which adopts the Qadaa' as an electoral district, was used in the 2009 parliamentary elections and it is based on a winner-takes-all system.

A consensus over a new electoral law has yet to be reached after the Orthodox Gathering's proposal that considers Lebanon a single district and allows each sect to vote for its own MPs under a proportional representation system, was opposed by President Michel Sleiman, former Prime Minister Mikati, Future bloc, the Progressive Socialist Party, and the independent Christian MPs of the March 14 camp, saying it harms the social fabric and increases sectarian tension.
