MP Kanaan says it is requirement to settle wage scale issue
Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan said the wage scale issue constitutes an “exceptional legislation,” noting that the Lebanese state’s interests are linked to the series of ranks and salaries.

“A chance has been given to reach consensus over the pay scale, but now it is required to settle the file. We do not accept any procrastination,” he said following his bloc’s weekly meeting on Tuesday.

MP Kanaan also called for ending the debate over the Lebanese who resorted to Israel during its 22-year occupation of southern Lebanon, and said: “We are working to settle this dossier”.

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rai had met, during his controversial visit to Jerusalem, with former members of the South Lebanon Army, a militia that was allied with Israel during its occupation of the South.

Former SLA troops, who make up about a fifth of the 10,000-strong Maronite community in Israel, fled south across the Lebanese border when Israeli forces withdrew unilaterally from Lebanon in 2000.

Branded as traitors in Lebanon, the ex-SLA men and their relatives fear to return and want Rai to intercede on their behalf in Beirut.
