Harb says negotiation with SAMA ongoing to find solution for World Cup broadcasting in Lebanon

Telecommunications Minister Boutros Harb declared Saturday that he will continue his contacts with the cable television provider Sama, which acquired the exclusive rights to broadcast the World Cup 2014 games in Lebanon, in order to find a solution for the Lebanese people to be able to watch it.

In this regard, Harb pointed out that “it is unfair that only those who have financial capabilities can watch the football games, while a great number of the people with low income are prevented from watching this worldwide event.”

Qatar’s state-owned BeIN, the new name for Al-Jazeera’s sports channel, has the distribution rights to the 2014 World Cup. Currently, Sama is the only one with the rights to air the World Cup in Lebanon and is charging $110 for the full package.

This comes after Lebanese state-run TV channel Tele Liban failed to acquire the broadcasting rights for the World Cup.
