The Special Tribunal for Lebanon adjourned its sessions until Tuesday June 24th.

The defense team of Hezbollah member Hassan Merhi had told the Special Tribunal for Lebanon on Thursday that it should not rush the trial in former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri's assassination before giving the defense team the needed time to prepare for the proceedings.

The counsel said during the second day of the trial's resumption that Merhi's lawyers are not capable of developing a detailed defense because the trial started in a staggered method.

On Wednesday, prosecutors submitted their opening statement describing Merhi as a “key player” in the February 2005 attack.

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon was set up by the United Nations at the Lebanese government's request to try the alleged perpetrators of the 2005 bombing in which former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and 21 others were killed.

The five suspects, who are being tried in absentia, are Merhi, Mustafa Badreddine, Salim Ayyash, Assad Sabra and Hassan Oneissi. They are all Hezbollah members.

The party denies involvement in the assassination and its leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has denounced the court as a conspiracy by his enemies, the U.S. and Israel.
