MP Alain Aoun to LBCI: Protests against extension of parliament's mandate do not pose threat on politicians
Change and Reform bloc MP Alain Aoun said on Wednesday that he supports freedom of speech, adding that the mass protest set to be held against the extension of the parliament's mandate does not pose a threat on Lebanese political figures.

Aoun's comments were made during a phone call with LBCI's Nharkom Said TV show whereby he voiced hopes that protests would put an end to pressing matters in the country.

He also noted that he is deploying efforts with his fellow MPs to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections.

If Parliament extends its term, it will be the second time in a span of two years. Set originally for June 2013, the parliamentary polls were postponed for 17 months in May of last year. Parliament’s current term is now set to expire in November.

The presidential post is also still vacant, with no successor to President Michel Sleiman, whose six-year mandate ended on May 25.

Civil society activists are holding continuous protests to denounce the possible extension of parliament’s mandate.
