FPM, Kataeb boycott session tasked with extending parliament's mandate
Change and Reform bloc Secretary MP Ibrahim Kanaan said on Wednesday that the Free Patriotic Movement bloc will boycott the parliamentary session tasked with extending the parliament's mandate.

MP Kanaan added that the Marada and Tashnag movements will take part in the session, noting however that Marada will vote in favor of the extension while Tashnag will vote against the extension of the parliament's mandate.

On Tuesday, the Kataeb party was clear in its announcement that it would also boycott the legislative session.

Speaker Nabih Berri warned on several occasions that the session would undermine constitutional partnership unless main Christian blocs partook in the vote.

Despite the boycott of the FPM and Kataeb, the Lebanese Forces, another main Christian party, would vote in favor of the extension, saying  that the state's institutions would be paralyzed if Lebanese lawmakers failed to extend their own mandate.

Last year, the parliament extended its mandate until November 2014 after lawmakers failed to agree on a new law and said the security situation in the country did not guarantee violence-free elections. A similar extension is set to take place today to avoid further vacuum.

Baabda Palace has been vacant since President Michel Sleiman's mandate ended in May. The rival MPs have failed to elect a new president over their disputes on a consensual candidate.

The majority of the March 8 alliance's MPs have boycotted the sessions, insisting that there should be consensus on a candidate.

But their boycott has also been seen as a sign of their rejection of Lebanese Forces leader Samir  Geagea's candidacy, which was officially endorsed by the March 14 camp before the coalition suggested agreeing on a consensual nominee.
