A delegation of bishops visited on Tuesday Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun at his residence in Rabieh and discussed with him the conditions of Christians in the Orient. The delegation included bishops Issam Darwish, Georges Saliba, Boulos Safar and Rweiss al-Orashalimi. Following the meeting, MP Aoun said that Christians in the Orient “should not be dealt with in this manner.” “There is a systematic eradication of Christians in the Orient,” he added. He also noted that the Christian community is suffering from the same misery witnessed under Ottoman rule. Aoun called on the International community to use its conscience in resolving the crisis. There are fears among religious minorities in neighboring Syria and Iraq, who have been constantly targeted by the Islamic State terrorist group. During the militants' battles in both countries, where they have announced a self-styled caliphate, minorities, including Christians, have been repeatedly targeted and killed, driven from their homes, had their women enslaved, places of worship destroyed, and ancient heritage demolished. The kidnapping of more than 220 Christian Assyrians by the IS in Syria last week have added to the current concerns. IS and the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front are deployed on Lebanon's eastern border region.
