Ministerial committee convenes to discuss waste dossier

Environment Minister Mohammad Mashnouq stated on Wednesday that the political situation overshadowing the cabinet hindered the prompt solution for the waste management crisis in Lebanon.

Prior to the meeting of the ministerial committee tasked with addressing the said crisis, Energy Minister Arthur Nazarian noted that the committee had previously rejected the disposal of waste at the Beirut River.

For his part, Education Minister Elias Bou Saab said that “failure in reaching an agreement over the waste dossier during today’s session is a clear sign that indicates that certain factions are pushing Prime Minister Tammam Salam to resign.”

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq stressed that “citizens who accept the work of sand and rock quarries in their regions do not have the right to object over the creation of a landfill,” emphasizing that the waste management company, Sukleen, is not responsible for the current crisis.
