[PHOTOS] Two “We Want Accountability” activists released after being shortly arrested

Two "We Want Accountability" activists were released on Thursday night after being shortly arrested on Beirut’s seaside for spray-painting newly established parking meters.

The arrests came during a protest on Beirut's seaside promenade known as the corniche, where activists from the “We Want Accountability” campaign sprayed the machines.

Plain-clothed police riding a Kia forced the activists into the car. However, the police issued later on a statement whereby it confirmed their detention, but said its members identified themselves as security personnel. The activists also reportedly said during the investigations that the servicemen verbally announced they were police.

The arrests prompted dozens of protesters to head to Ministry of Interior and blocked the road outside the ministry's building to call for the release of the two activists.

For his part, Beirut governor Ziad Chbib suspended the decision to install the parking meters on the seaside corniche.
