Rai before leaving to France: LAF is sacrosanct
Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai said on Saturday that the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) is Lebanon’s backbone, highlighting the importance of respecting the sanctity of the military institution, the presidency, the cabinet and the parliament.

“Constructive criticism [of the Army] is welcomed, but undermining the constitutional institution’s integrity is another subject entirely”, Rai said before leaving to France.

Rai said that the discussions that will be held with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and other French officials will focus on keeping Lebanon a democratic state open towards both the West and the Arab world, adding that they will also tackle the Arab revolutions’ repercussions on Middle East Christians.

“Some regimes need to walk the path of democracy and modernity”, Rai said, adding that violations against people’s rights should stop. The Maronite Patriarch rejected the use of violence, saying that no man is entitled to end the life of another.
