Lassa’s Christian endowment issue returns to forefront

The issue related to the Christian endowments in Lassa returned to the forefront as Property No.42 is allegedly being trespassed on.         

In a statement to LBCI, Father Chamoun Aoun accused the head of the town’s municipality of trespassing on the property, adding that the latter has thereby violated the Prosecutor General’s decision. He called for immediately halting works in this property.    

Father Aoun urged all concerned officials, namely Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, to take necessary action to put an end to “violations” on Property No.42.      

Father Georges Atallah told LBCI that the town’s residents were surprised to see that works have been resumed today, adding that the Judiciary will decide the property of the land. Father Atallah stressed that sectarian strife will benefit no one.        

For his part, one of the town’s Sheikhs said that Lassa’s residents support coexistence, adding that the ongoing dispute is not over farmlands, but aims at preventing the trespassing of Muslim holy sites. He said that the disputed land is a Muslim graveyard.
