General Workers Union set to strike

The Lebanese General Workers’ Union (GWU) said that it will move forward with the strike scheduled for October 12.

The union is calling for raising the minimum wage, adjusting wages according to ratios, increasing social benefits and devising health, educational and transportation policies as well as other social policies in the 2012 budget.    

A statement was issued following a meeting between the GWU’s leadership, the syndical coordination committee, public schools teachers’ union, technical and vocational education unions and the private schools teachers’ union held in the headquarters of the General Workers’ Union.  

The statement stressed the right of workers in the public sector to enjoy the freedom of association enshrined in the Lebanese Constitution as well as Arab and international conventions.

The statement also highlighted the coordination committee’s right to take part in the ongoing negotiations within the price index committee. According to the statement, the coordination committee represents the majority of the public servants as well as teachers in the vocational and academic public fields.
