Turkey’s Karpowership stops electricity supply to Lebanon as contract expires
Turkey’s Karpowership said on Friday that it has stopped supplying Lebanon with electricity power from its two power ships Fatmagül Sultan and Orhan Bey docked off the Jiyeh and Zouk power plants respectively.
In a statement, the company said that its contract expired this morning, adding that it will inform the Lebanese people through the media outlets of the withdrawal process of its two powerships respectively and that in due course.
“As of October 1, our contract with the Electricte Du Liban (EDL) has ended and we will begin the process of withdrawing the two power ships. We are acutely aware of the country’s ongoing acute energy crisis. During our eight years operating in Lebanon, despite all the challenges we have done all we can to support the Lebanese people as the government addresses fundamental challenges the country faces. We wish the very best for the Prime Minister, his government and the country in the coming months and years,” the company’s spokesperson said.
Karpowership has been operating its two powerships since 2013, providing Lebanon with one of the cheapest and most reliable energy sources, generating about 370 megawatts, or 25% of the total energy production in Lebanon, that is the equivalent of 4-6 hours of electricity supply per day.
