REPORT: Cabinet holds final session for 2012

The Cabinet declared on Thursday that it will continue subsidizing flour till February 2013 with prospects of forming a committee to further study the post subsidy phase and the possibility of “freeing” the prices.

On the other hand, the cabinet will be convening on the 3rd of January to discuss the file of Syrian refugees.

The Lebanese cabinet convened on Thursday at the Baabda Palace, under the auspices of President Michel Sleiman.

Before the beginning of the session, Sleiman and PM Nijab Mikati held talks and discussed the latest updates.

The cabinet's agenda included 49 items. It was expected that within the last session for 2012 important issues would be discussed, including the oil exploration tenders and the regulatory decrees of the oil sector.

Minister Gibran Bassil said that comparing to other allocations, the suggested salaries are “normal”, revealing that some people who were potential candidates declined the offer because of the salaries’ low rate.

In this context, the cabinet approved to fix the salaries of the members of the petroleum authority at around $17,000.

Separately, when asked about Social Affairs Minister Wael Abou Faour’s criticism concerning the Syrian warrants against the Syrian refugees, Foreign Affairs Minister Adnan Mansour said, "according to diplomatic regulations, the concerned authorities must be informed about any diplomatic warrant, stressing that it is just a simple diplomatic procedure.”

For his part, Abou Faour emphasized that he will be dealing with this issue "via political means."

This as, President Michel Sleiman expressed his hopes for the exertion of enhanced efforts to endorse a new electoral law and accordingly called on the Interior Ministry to start preparing for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
