Geagea: Those objecting Orthodox Gathering proposal must suggest alternatives

LF chief Samir Geagea held a televised press conference on Tuesday, in which he tackled the controversial issue of the electoral law proposals.

In this regard, Geagea stated that those who are objecting the Orthodox Gathering proposal should suggest alternatives, stressing that "the LF party worked hard to reach a consensus over the electoral law and held talks with several parties 'but to no avail'."

Geagea then added that the electoral law proposed by the Orthodox Gathering was approved by Maronite leaders who met in Bkerke, and despite its flaws remains better than the 60's law.

When asked about the date of elections, Geagea emphasized that constitutional deadlines must be respected to preserve the country's democracy and therefore the elections should be held on their due time.

On the proportionality law proposed by the cabinet and supported by President Michel Sleiman, Geagea said that this law is similar to the 60's law and does not ensure adequate representation.
