Introduction to the evening news 03-02-2013

The town of Mreijat bid its farewell to martyr Major Pierre Bachalaany. However, this last goodbye did not close the wounds of the Arsal incident amid the failure to arrest perpetrators and the LAF’s ongoing encirclement of the town.

While LAF Commander Jean Kahwaji considered that the crime was premeditated and was committed using barbaric means, Prime Minister Najib Mikati warned against sectarian tensions. Mikati who visited the Ministry of Defense to express his condolences to the martyr’s family, stressed his full support for the LAF. He stressed that it would be unacceptable for any Lebanese party to feel targeted at this moment.

LBCI received a set of photos showing the assaulted LAF members in their military uniforms inside the Arsal municipality’s building.  Military sources considered that these photographs confirm the Lebanese army’s story on the Arsal incident. However, this story did not prevent the emergence of other stories; first, MP Khaled Daher who held Hezbollah responsible for the killing of the two LAF martyrs and citizen Khaled Hmayed, then Sheikh Salem al-Rafei who visited Arsal heading a delegation from the Association of Muslim Scholars and condemned what he called “the ambiguous operation”, hinting at Hezbollah. He also called on concerned authorities to form an investigation committee and lift the siege on Arsal.
