Berri expresses discontent with inking electoral decree

Following the Wednesday periodic meeting, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri expressed his discontent with the signing of the electoral decree, and said that the 1960s law is not effective.          

Berri added that the Orthodox Gathering’s electoral draft is on a legislative track pointing out that he will await a consensual law.               

Deputies quoted the Speaker as saying that inking the decree shouldn’t have been done without his consultation.                   

Deputies added that Speaker Berri did not call for the General Authority’s meeting and is still holding talks in this regard so as to avoid the meeting be deemed a reaction for inking the decree.                   

In this context, Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Nawaf al-Mousawi told LBCI that the 1960’s law is not effective and mentioned that the coming elections may not be held upon it.                          

“The Orthodox Gathering’s electoral draft is a legislative proposal,” MP Mousawi said.          

For his part, Change and Reform Bloc MP Naji Gharios told LBCI that deputies felt that Speaker Berri is dissatisfied since President Michel Sleiman and Prime Minister Najib Mikati directly signed the decree without him being consulted.
