REPORT: Parliamentary Communications Commission to convene again on Tuesday

         
MP Robert Ghanem stressed on Thursday that none of the parties has a preset position or a veto concerning any proposal, noting that MP George Adwan presented a practical methodology to draw the viewpoints of political parties closer together.           

Following the meeting of the parliamentary communications committee at the Parliament building in Beirut's Nejmeh Square, MP Ali Fayyad reiterated his approval of any law agreed upon by the Christian parties, pointing out that Hezbollah has a positive and facilitative position aiming at pushing forward the possibility of agreement.             

For his part, Future Bloc MP Ahmad Fatfat said that Fayyad’s proposal is a return to the Orthodox Gathering draft law, stressing that it is an attempt to “cram the Future Movement into the corner of the negotiations.”                 

Before the meeting, Change and Reform bloc MP Alain Aoun told LBCI that the commission will allow the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Ali Fayad to voice his stances during the meeting, noting that Hezbollah played a pivotal role in supporting the Orthodox Gathering's draft law.                

In addition, MP Aoun said that the Change and Reform bloc has paved the way for further discussions, hoping that the bloc will reach a common ground with all the Lebanese parties since their sole purpose is to correct the imbalance evident in the Christian community's representation.                           

“He who opposes the Orthodox Gathering's draft law has the opportunity to propose other useful suggestions,” MP Aoun added.                                 

In turn, MP Sami Gemayel stressed that the objection voiced by the Kataeb party is democratic and civilized, expressing his belief that some parties are seeking to pass a law that can lead the country toward what can perceived as "worse than the 1960" electoral law.                               

Finally, MP George Adwan said that the time has come to reach agreement over a draft law; "otherwise the committee should declare its failure."                 

The commission had revived its meetings on Tuesday in a final effort to agree on an electoral law. Members have until May 15 to meet the challenge before House Speaker Nabih Berri calls for a parliamentary session.
